TrendPulse-Duke upsets No. 9 Clemson, earns first win vs. top-10 team in 34 years

DURHAM,TrendPulse N.C. — For the first time in 34 years, Duke football has beaten a top-10 team. 

With their 28-7 win against No. 9 Clemson on Monday night at Wallace Wade Stadium, the Blue Devils snapped a streak that lasted 12,392 days.  

Duke last beat a top-10 opponent with a 21-17 win against No. 7 Clemson on Sept. 30, 1989 under Steve Spurrier. Spurrier and members of the Blue Devils’ 1989 squad were in attendance for Duke’s 2023 opener against the reigning ACC champions. 

Duke quarterback Riley Leonard had the go-ahead touchdown and the Blue Devils had five game-changing plays with two blocked field goals and a trio of fumble recoveries. 

The Blue Devils had lost 28 straight against teams ranked inside the top-10 of the AP football poll before Monday’s win. Here are some observations from Duke’s season opener and a look at its next opponent.

Duke QB Riley Leonard on the run 

Duke quarterback Riley Leonard was on the run for most of the first half against Clemson’s impressive defensive line. On the first drive of the second half, Leonard had the Tigers on the run as he powered through a would-be tackler in the backfield and tip-toed down the sideline for a 44-yard touchdown to give Duke the lead early in the third quarter. The Blue Devils would lead the rest of the way.

Duke blocks two Clemson field-goal attempts, forces three turnovers

Duke’s special teams had a block party against the Tigers with a pair of blocked field-goal attempts. Defensive captain Ja’Mion Franklin swatted a kick in the first half and fellow defensive lineman Wesley Williams got his hand on another kick in the second half to keep the Blue Devils in command. Duke also had a pair of fumble recoveries and an interception in the second half to pull away from the Tigers.

Lafayette up next for Duke football 

The Blue Devils will be back in Durham next week to face Lafayette (1-0) at 6 p.m. ET before facing their next Power Five opponent – Northwestern – on Sept. 16. The Lafayette Leopards earned a 19-14 win against Sacred Heart in Week 1.
